Bret Jordan, MS, CISSP

Bret Jordan is a cybersecurity executive, global standards architect, and institution builder focused on securing emerging technology at scale. He currently serves as Chief Security Strategist at Afero, Co-President and Co-Founder of OSTERA, Chair of Working Party 2 in the UN’s ITU-T Study Group 17 (Security), and Adjunct Professor teaching graduate-level courses in cyber threat intelligence.

For more than 35 years, Bret has operated at the intersection of technology, policy, and global collaboration, leading cybersecurity strategy across large enterprises, startups, nonprofits, and academic institutions. He has held senior CTO-level roles at Broadcom, Symantec, Blue Coat Systems, and Solera Networks, where he focused on long-term technology strategy, emerging risk, and ecosystem-scale security.

Bret is widely recognized for his leadership in global cybersecurity standards. He has served as architect, chair, and author for foundational standards including STIX, TAXII, CACAO, OpenC2, JSS (ITU-T X.590), and JCS (RFC 8785), which underpin modern threat intelligence sharing, automated defense, and secure interoperability across government and industry. He previously served as President and Chair of the Board of OASIS Open.

His work at the International Telecommunication Union reflects a career-long focus on building trust at the global level. As Chair of ITU-T Study Group 17 Working Party 2, Bret helps guide international consensus on cybersecurity frameworks that impact global telecommunications, digital infrastructure, and cross-border interoperability.

Bret co-founded OSTERA to address a critical gap between research, standards development, and real-world deployment, creating a neutral, high-trust forum to accelerate secure-by-design technology and standards before global adoption.

He has extensive experience collaborating with governments, regulators, critical infrastructure operators, industry leaders, and academic researchers worldwide. His current research interests include threat intelligence, 6G, AI, secure IoT and supply chains, automated cybersecurity playbooks, and the societal impact of emerging technology.

Bret has also presented numerous times at RSAC, ISC2 Security Congress, FS-ISAC, ITU, FIRST, ETSI TC-Cyber, EU CRA, CES, ENISA, and other industry specific conferences; helped create the first wide scale inter-University decentralized 802.1X network that inspired the creators of EduRoam; and provided thought leadership and guidance to many organizations as a member of their Board of Directors.

Outside of work, Bret enjoys cooking, skiing, building new things, and solving hard problems.
